My name is Dorothy but people call me Dora so feel free to do the same. I live in the UK and I have an Italian/Nigerian/German background. I am very passionate about Natural Health, Wholefoods, Travelling, Dance and Spirituality. But most of all I enjoy sharing knowledge and inspiring other to thrive and be happy.
The light Bulb went On!
I want to share with you why I changed my diet from a standard diet which includes everything from meat, diary, processed foods, white sugar, table salt & processed oils….to a whole food plant based diet (consisting mainly of raw fruits, vegies & whole foods).
Before I changed my diet and life style I used to suffer from bad hay fever and allergies. For example, when I was once in Thailand my whole body was covered in rashes and there were other times when my eyes would just swell up because of something I had come in contact with or ate. I also had other minor problems like bad period pains, lipoma which is a random swelling on your head or ribs and I experienced lots of bloating and gas when I ate meals throughout the day.
The change happened after meeting some really inspiring people like my sister & her friend (Matteo), and especially a woman I met in Thailand whose name is Maya. She herself was battling with a life threating illness at the time I met her. She told me all about how our diet affects our health and that got me curious.
The funny thing is that I actually didn’t want to change my diet. I thought before then that I was pretty healthy and to some extent I was. I was already making fresh juices at the time and cut down my intake of animal protein and processed foods, but I still experienced many of the symptoms described above, plus I wanted to know how food influenced our health physically, spiritually and emotionally. This got me researching. However, the change to a whole food plant based diet happened gradually for me.
When I spoke with Maya, she told me that I had candida and that I should do more research about it. I started researching this topic while I was still on holiday and also when I got back home.
My Healthy Food Transition
The first major change for me with regards to food was to introduce smoothies in my diet along with my juicing. This was a big step forward for me because before then I usually had oats for breakfast with unsoaked nuts and pasturised yogurt. I ate this kind of breakfast for years and although oats can be beneficial, most contain gluten which can trigger allergic reactions in many people. Dairy is also a very common allergen and eating unsoaked nuts can cause indigestion.
So here I was discovering these new secrets and I felt so happy and blessed. I was excited because I started to understand that the food we eat can help our body to heal or can make us sick. It can help us to thrive or feel weighed down with toxicity.
After changing my breakfast habits, to only raw foods like having green smoothies, vegetable juices or lots of fruits, I continued working on lunch and dinner. Whilst doing my research, reading lots of books and searching the web I found many real life stories of people recovering from a whole host of illnesses like, cancer, MS, arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes etc One of the keys to health is eating foods which are alive. Alive, in the sense that they contain an array of living enzymes, vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The key, as simple as it sounds, is to eat living raw fruit and vegetables and to eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible i.e. brown rice rather than white rice, sea salt rather than table salt, raw honey rather than sugar etc.
My View about Food Now
I had to completely change my way of thinking about raw vegetables & Fruits. Don’t get me wrong, I have always known they are good for you but before my healthy switch over, I usually would cook these babies until “the lights went out”. Another way of saying “till most of their nutritional value was lost. When we cook food at cooking temperatures of 220 degrees, most of the vitamins die, all enzymes & phytochemicals die, it de-natures protein and turns minerals into an inorganic form which cannot be used by our bodies. Hence, I had to change my perspective completely about these foods. I had to see them as a main meal, as my lunch, as my dinner, not just as a side dish to my main meal.
Leaving the past behind
I have been on a whole food plant based diet since 2013 and have had some tremendous improvements. My skin is mostly clear and glowing. I have had several people complement the texture of my skin since the switchover. YAY!!! Even more importantly, my allergies have all gone and my lipoma has shrunk a great deal. I rarley have bloating, unless my period is on its way, and I always feel nourished and happy. I have also found this new enthusiasm to share this wonderful knowledge which I am doing right now.
